How Many Types of Depression Self-Help Are There?

Exploring alternative depression self help treatments

Depression help is usually divided into two categories. The first is help using medicines or going the medical route. This is usually the first course of treatment. The second part is using self help. You can find out about medicines from your medical practitioner, psychologist, therapist. Since this site is dedicated to alternative forms of depression self help, we’ll be discussing that.

As you already know, there are several forms of alternative depression help. Some are also country specific. They have developed as part of the traditions in certain countries. Others are alternative medicinal, cognitive and also stuff that other ‘normal’ people do. You might wonder why I say ‘normal’ people…you see, everyone in this world, and I mean everyone, has their own little kinks. But of course you and I both know that there is still a difference between a ‘normal’ person and a depressed person. Coming back to alternative therapies, all are proven to work to alleviate depression. We’re now going to see an overview of these alternative treatments.

Remember that we talked about country specific treatments? These were not developed to cure depression. But they were developed to help people live better. The following treatments are known and have been developed over 1000s of years.

One of them is Acupuncture. This is a Chinese technique. Here the focus is on puncturing specific points of the body with needles. This helps to release energy and help the energy system of the body flow better. A more contemporary treatment is Reflexology. This is a treatment using massage to relax the various pressure points of the body. Another contemporary therapy is Aromatherapy. The fragrance of Lavender is calming. Aromatic oils can also be used for massage. Another ancient treatment is Yoga. This was developed in India and there are various forms. However the basic premise of Yoga is a mind-body synergy. Yoga is basically a lifestyle. But maybe you don’t want to change your whole lifestyle. We’ll now talk about other alternative depression help treatments that don’t require you to do that.

How about some fun things you can do to alleviate depression. One of them is Art therapy. This consists of painting, or drawing; acting, theatre, or also writing. Art therapy is good because it allows you to freely express your feelings. Especially painting and drawing. But you might not be into painting, so this is something you can try next.

Music therapy has also been proven to work. As you know Music consists of sound. All sound produces certain brain waves in us. Certain music makes us tense, others make us happy.

“I use the music to vent, and a lot of the stuff that I am writing about or was writing about contained a lot of anger and anxiety, stress and depression, so that's how the album came out so dark.” Vanilla Ice

Put on some happy music and see how you feel.

This was a quick overview of some alternative depression self help treatments. I hope that you’ve found this article useful.
